about us
Imagine labouring away for hours rolling hundreds of perfectly round rotis, cutting them, folding them and filling them to create little spice-packed samosas. This is how the first Surti Indian Samosas were made.
It all started over 25 years ago by husband and wife - Hina (left) and Vinod (right), in the kitchen of their small family home. At the time, they started by producing samosas for a handful of Auckland Hotels. The production was minimal, however there was belief that the business had the potential to grow. With the little money they had, a small shop was set up in Panmure, Auckland where, after leaving their jobs, they begun to build the company.
Of the two, Hina is the chef and creator. Over the years, she has developed a deep understanding of authentic Indian food that was passed down from her mother from a young age. With her skills, she was able to master the art of samosa-making and ensured that every morsel was up to the highest standard possible. Together with Vinod’s entrepreneurship, customer focus and pure willingness to succeed, they were able to create strong customer relationships among the Auckland Indian market.
As the business continued to grow beyond the walls of our small plant, we decided to pack up shop and move to a purpose-built factory, where with a few new gadgets, we increased our production capabilities and expanded our customer base.
With the samosas running at full swing, we were able to expand our products and services to include natural yoghurt and contract manufacturing. What was “Surti Indian Samosa” became “Surti” to encompass our ever-expanding capabilities.
Today, the next generation proudly carries on the Surti story. Shyam, the youngest son, joined the family business in 2019 and has been leading it ever since. With his drive and fresh perspective, he’s helped the business grow and evolve while keeping the same family values at heart.
In 2024, his wife Neelam joined the team, bringing her creativity and eye for design to the Surti brand. She now looks after our fundraising and marketing, sharing Surti’s story and connecting with communities all over New Zealand.
Most recently, in 2025, Kishan came on board to manage operations and improvements within the factory. His focus on efficiency and innovation ensures we continue to deliver the same quality our customers know and love — just on a bigger scale.
Together, this next generation is continuing what began by Mum & Dad’s passion over 25 years ago — blending tradition and innovation, while keeping the warmth of family at the heart of everything we do.
